The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a law that helps protect you from unfair treatment by companies that collect debts.

If you owe money, here are some of the protections you have under this law:

  1. Debt collectors cannot contact you at odd times or inconvenient places.
  2. A debt collector cannot use social media to publicly post about a debt that they claim you owe.
  3. Debt collectors cannot harass you or anyone else over the phone or through any other form of contact, including text or email.
  4. If a debt collector knows that a lawyer is representing you about the debt, the debt collector generally must stop contacting you and must contact the lawyer instead.
  5. When you dispute a debt, the debt collector must halt all collection activities until they provide you with evidence that you owe the debt. If they can't prove it, they can't bother you anymore. If they provide proof, you can make an informed decision on how to handle it. Learn more about disputing a debt to understand your rights.
