If you are stopped in your car:

  1. If they ask, show the police your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.
  2. If they search your car, tell them you do not consent. That may protect you later. (Sometimes your car can be searched without a warrant.)
  3. If the police suspect you are drunk driving, they will ask you to take a breath-alcohol and coordination test. If you fail or refuse to take the tests:
    • you will be arrested & they can search your car
    • your driver’s license may be suspended, and
    • your car may be taken away.

This is a 1-minute video about your legal rights and responsibilities when you are stopped by the police in your car.
