Know your rights: cash assistance by shelter type

If you live in a homeless shelter, you may qualify for cash or carfare to help you survive. The amount depends on the type of shelter, including whether or not it has meals or a kitchen for preparing your own food.

Cash assistance and welfare is available for families living in:

  • shelters with meals provided
  • shelters with kitchens to cook your own meals
  • shelters or motels with no kitchen or meals

Help is also available for people living in singles shelters, shelters for pregnant people, and domestic violence shelters

Learn more from the City Bar Justice Center about the level of assistance available and what to do if you are not receiving the right amount.
