Anyone can report suspected child abuse, neglect or maltreatment. However, New York law requires certain people to report any suspected bad treatment that they come across in their work. They are called "mandated reporters." There is a long list of mandated reporters, who mostly work in:

  • law enforcement,
  • schools and daycare,
  • medical, mental health or dental offices and
  • social services.

Mandated reporters must call when they have "reasonable cause" to suspect that a child has been neglected or abused. If they don't make a report and a child is harmed, they can be punished for breaking the law.

Call 1-800-342-3720 if you suspect abuse, neglect, or bad treatment of a child. Check with Child Protective Services to learn if you are a mandated reporter.
