If you live outside of New York City, learn more about school meals in New York State.
New York City Public Schools give free breakfast, lunch, and after-school meals to all students during the school year. You don't need to apply or show any papers to get these meals. The meals meet government nutrition rules. They offer vegetarian and vegan options, and all meals are completely pork-free. The schools also have accommodations for students with food allergies or special dietary needs.
During summer when school is out, NYC also runs a Free Summer Meals Program from late June 27 to late August. This program gives free breakfast and lunch to anyone 18 or younger. You can get these meals at certain public schools, community pools, parks, libraries, and from food trucks around the city. Just like during the school year, you don't need to sign up, show papers, or have an ID to get summer meals.
