The Amsterdam office of the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York provides civil legal services to low income residents of Fulton, Montgomery, and Schoharie Counties.

We provide free advice, brief service, referrals, community legal education, and full representation in a variety of legal matters.

We also provide services through our many special projects including the

  • Disability Advocacy Project
  • Nutrition Outreach & Education Project
  • WIC Outreach Program
  • Homelessness Prevention Projects
  • Domestic Violence Legal Assistance Project
  • Crime Victims Attorney Project
  • Senior Legal Services Program
  • Foreclosure Prevention Project
  • Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
  • Upstate New York Immigration Law Project
  • HIV/AIDS Law Consortium.

 

Additionally, our Private Attorney Involvement program works with local private lawyers who volunteer to represent our clients without charge on cases such as name change, divorce, bankruptcy, wills and advance directives, evictions or consumer defense.

Legal Aid of Northeastern New York has offices in Albany, Amsterdam, Canton, Plattsburgh, and Saratoga Springs and serves 16 counties. Special projects vary by office and county.

Income caps vary per program.

Some special projects have income caps at 150% or 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

Additionally, people with incomes up to 200% of the poverty guidelines are generally eligible.

We may ask about fixed debts and obligations, employment-related and medical expenses, and other factors.

This program does not serve individuals currently incarcerated (in prison).

Some projects serve specific communities, such as HIV positive individuals and their families.

Must reside in Fulton, Montgomery, or Schoharie County.

Advice, brief service, referral or legal education will be provided to all callers, including referrals to our volunteer lawyer program if appropriate and feasible.

Full representation is generally provided only for a portion of cases.

Please note: due to limited resources, LASNNY is not always able to provide full representation to all who qualify.

If you are seeking a divorce, full representation may be provided for victims of domestic violence. Your case may be referred to us through a program we partner with in your county.

Also, for certain legal issues, free Pro Se clinics or self-help materials may be available.

Intake is done daily on a first-call, first-served basis until daily quota is filled. Exceptions made for emergencies, victims of domestic violence and special projects.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, especially if you are seeking an order of protection, please inform us when you call.
