Who We Are

The NYC Bankruptcy Assistance Project, part of Legal Services NYC, provides pro bono bankruptcy assistance to low-income New Yorkers. We give bankruptcy advice and counseling. Pro bono volunteers prepare and file bankruptcy petitions for debtors who need to file Chapter 7; those debtors then represent themselves once the case has been filed. We also assist certain debtors needing to file Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, preparing and filing their petitions and representing them throughout the bankruptcy process. We also find volunteer attorneys for parties with contested matters in the bankruptcy Court. Most of our assistance is provided by volunteer attorneys and law students, who are trained and supervised by the Project’s bankruptcy attorney.

New Yorkers who need assistance may call LSNYC’s Access Line at (917) 661-4500, Mon-Fri from 10am-4pm. Existing clients may call or email their advocates at their direct phone numbers.
