This month, we would like to highlight Robert, a LiveHelp Volunteer for LawHelpNY.
LawHelpNY.org helps New Yorkers with low-paying employers to solve their legal problems. Our real-time online chat service, powered by dedicated volunteers, helps guide users to self-help materials, legal aid organizations, and court information. Robert shares his story and recent experiences as a LiveHelp volunteer.
Please share a little about yourself and your journey through law school.
I recently graduated from St. John's University School of Law. When I first started law school, I was interested in intellectual property law. However, after working at a plaintiff-side employment law firm during my 2L, my interest shifted. I handled a lot of employment discrimination cases and the experience showed me how the law can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people facing difficult circumstances. As a result, I took several employment law courses with a focus on wage and hour law. It ultimately led me to apply to volunteer at LawHelpNY. I value the opportunity to help people by providing them with the information and resources they need.
What valuable skills do you acquire as a LiveHelp Operator?
The most valuable skill I developed as a LiveHelp Operator was learning how to actively listen. You’re not only hearing what someone is saying but understanding their problem and identifying their legal issue and what information would best address their needs. You develop the ability to quickly recognize their issues and provide them with the relevant resources. Another valuable skill is explaining the intricacies of the law in a way that is comprehensible to those without a legal background. Working as a LiveHelp Operator gave me the opportunity to hone those skills in ways that I likely would not have experienced elsewhere.
What's been your most memorable experience while volunteering with LiveHelp?
The cases that have stuck with me the most are the ones facing imminent danger. Being able to connect them with resources and organizations that could help them safely navigate those situations was impactful. It was rewarding to know I could play a small part in helping someone access the support they needed during a difficult time.
What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering?
I would encourage anyone considering it to apply. It’s been a fantastic experience. It’s given me the opportunity to apply what I learned in school to real scenarios and helping people has been rewarding. You develop skills beyond the classroom.
Thank you, Robert!
