If you do not speak English well, you can still get help at New York State offices. State agencies must give you free interpreters in your main language so you can understand and use their services. This includes American Sign Language (ASL).
They must also translate important papers into the 12 most common languages in New York. Each agency has a plan for language access, and they must post it online and update it every two years. Check the website of the agency you are using. Most sites let you pick another language to view their pages.
Remember: If you do not speak English well, you can still get services. Always ask for an interpreter. You can also use an “I Speak” card to show staff your language.
