If your child has a disability that affects their learning, they might need an IEP from the school. IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. It is a written plan that explains how your child will get special education services at school for free.
How to get an IEP:
- Ask the school for help. Or your school might suggest an IEP.
- School staff will evaluate your child to see if they have the kind of disability that qualifies.
- The disability must affect how they do in school
- The IEP team (including you as the parent) meets to create a plan with goals
- The team decides what special services your child needs
What happens next:
- The school gets your written permission (consent) before starting any services
- Your child spends as much time as possible in regular classrooms with other students
- They get extra support when needed
- You can withdraw your consent if you change your mind
Besides the IEP, there are many other services and supports that might help your child succeed in school.
