If you're transgender, gender nonconforming, or nonbinary and recently moved to New York, there’s resources available for you.

You can get help with:

  • Safe housing and shelters across the state, from NYC to upstate communities
  • Gender-affirming healthcare (medical care that helps you live as your true gender), including hormones and surgery referrals
  • Changing your name or gender marker on your ID and other documents (free or low-cost legal help available)
  • Finding a job and building work skills
  • Getting mental health support and calling crisis hotlines

Your rights in New York:

  • No one can discriminate against you because of your gender identity. This includes housing, healthcare, jobs, and schools.
  • Students can use their chosen name and pronouns at school. You can also use bathrooms that match your gender.
  • Employers must treat you fairly and cannot fire you or refuse to hire you because of your gender identity.

The guide below has contact information for community centers, health clinics, legal aid organizations, and support groups throughout New York State. It also has special resources for youth, elders, disabled people, immigrants, and sex workers.
