What does LGBTQIA+ mean?
LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and all other identities not listed here. It includes people who might feel different about who they love or how they see themselves.
Every LGBTQIA+ student in New York has the right to be themselves and feel safe at school.
What your school must do
- Respect your gender identity.
- Use the name and pronouns you choose, even if your parents don't know or don't agree.
- Let you wear clothes that match who you are.
- Let you use the bathroom and locker room that feels right for you.
- Let you join sports teams and gym classes that match your gender identity.
- Never ask you personal questions about your body.
- Keep you safe from bullying and unfair treatment.

Important Things to Know
Your privacy is protected
You get to choose who you come out to. Your school cannot share information about your gender identity without your permission. This means they cannot share information with your parents unless you agree. If telling your parents might not be safe for you, your school must find another way to handle things.
Changing your name or gender on school records
If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian's permission to officially change your name or gender on school records.
If You Need Help
If your school is not following these rules, or if you are being treated unfairly, you can get help from the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU).
