If you're transgender, gender-nonconforming, nonbinary, or intersex, you have the right to be yourself at school in New York.
This means:
- Your school must respect your gender identity
- Your school must keep you safe from bullying and mean treatment
- You can wear clothes that match who you are
- Your school must use the name and pronouns you want them to use, even if your parents don't know or agree.
- Your school cannot tell your parents about your gender identity without your permission.
- You can use the bathroom and locker room that feels right for you
- You can join sports teams that match your gender identity.
- Your school cannot ask you personal questions about your body
- You get to choose who you want to come out to.
If your school breaks these rules, you can get help from the New York Civil Liberties Union. They also have other organizations that support LGBTQ+ students.
