If you or your family came from another country, you still have the right to go to school in New York for free. It doesn't matter where you were born or what papers you have. Schools have to let you sign up and attend classes just like any other student.

This means:

  • Your school has to keep your personal information private. They can't tell police officers or government agents about where you're from unless a judge says they have to.
  • Police officers at school can't ask you questions about your immigration status or arrest you just because of where your family is from.
  • If agents want to talk to you at school, your parents have to say it's okay first.
  • You also have the right to feel safe at school. No one can bully you because of where you're from.

If someone breaks these rules, you or your family can file complaints with the state education department or attorney general's office.
