If you're a teen in New York who has a child or might be pregnant, you have important rights that protect you. Only you get to decide what to do about your pregnancy—whether to continue, have an abortion, or make an adoption plan.

This means:

  • You can get confidential pregnancy testing. No one can tell your parents about the results unless you say it's okay.
  • No one can force you to take any medical tests without your permission.
  • If you are pregnant, you have the right to stay in your regular school. They cannot make you switch to a different school or GED program.
  • You can take time off for doctor visits, having your baby, or other health needs, and your school must help you catch up when you return.

You also have the right to make all your own healthcare decisions without your parents' permission.

If you have a child, you can make decisions about raising your child and getting healthcare for both of you.

If you feel you are being treated unfairly because you are pregnant or parenting, contact the New York Civil Liberties Union.
