Call 911 right away if:
- You are in danger or see a crime happening.
- You have a serious injury or health emergency.
- You need help fast and waiting could make things worse.
Get ready before a disaster
You can take simple steps now to protect yourself later.
1. Make an emergency contact list
Write down important phone numbers. Keep them somewhere safe. Include:
- 911
- Local police and fire department
- Hospitals
- Your utility companies
- Family or friends you trust
2. Stay informed during an emergency
Listen to local news on TV or radio. You can also check official websites or follow government pages on social media for updates and instructions.
3. Sign up for alerts
Many places in New York offer emergency alerts by text, phone, or email. These tell you about dangers, evacuations, or safety steps to take.
- If you’re in New York State, you can call the DFS Disaster Hotline at (800) 339-1759 for support after disasters.
- If you’re in New York City, sign up with Notify NYC to receive alerts via text message, phone call, or email. These alerts will keep you informed about emergencies, evacuations, and safety instructions.
If you are undocumented and affected by a disaster, call the Office for New Americans (ONA) Hotline at (800) 566-7636, Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–8:00 PM. Help is available in over 200 languages.
The state also has an online hub for disaster help. It shares information about aid programs, shelter, food, and other services. New resources are added as they become available.
How to apply for FEMA help
If the federal government declares a disaster, you can apply for help from FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency). You can apply whether you have insurance or not.

Prepare your home before storms
Doing small things ahead of time can reduce damage:
- Check your insurance and update it if needed.
- Move valuable items to higher floors.
- Look at trees near your home for damage or risks.
- Make a home inventory (a list of your belongings).
Stay informed, have a plan, and keep your contact information readily available.
