Expedited SNAP is emergency food stamp benefits for people in urgent need. If you qualify, you could get benefits as soon as the day after you apply. The process is faster and requires less paperwork than the regular SNAP process.

If you already have SNAP, read about the new work requirements to keep your benefits. For SNAP updates, visit the New York State government website.

Do I qualify for expedited SNAP?

You may qualify if at least one of these applies to you:

  • Your household has $100 or less in cash or bank savings AND less than $150 in monthly income.
  • You are a migrant or seasonal farm worker with little or no money.
  • Your total monthly income and savings are less than what you pay each month for rent, mortgage, heating, and utilities combined.

Cash and savings are called "liquid resources." This includes money in bank accounts, cash on hand, and lump-sum payments like tax refunds.

How do I apply?

Go to your local Department of Social Services (DSS) office. Tell the person at the front desk that you need expedited food stamps. They may send you to a separate food stamp office. A worker will give you an application to fill out.

What documents do I need?

You will need to show:

  • Your identity, such as a driver's license, birth certificate, or Social Security card.
  • The number of people in your household. Bring birth certificates or Social Security cards for your children.
  • Your income, if you have any.
  • Your savings or bank account information, such as bank statements.

You should not be denied just because you do not have all of these documents. Bring whatever you have. The more proof you have, the better your chances.

What happens after I apply?

You will have an interview on the same day you apply for expedited SNAP. The worker will tell you at the end of the interview if you qualify or not.

How long will it take to get benefits?

You should get your benefits within 5 days. If you have no food right now, ask the worker for a referral to a local food pantry or find a local food bank for immediate food help.

What if I cannot get to the office?

If you cannot travel because of a medical reason or lack of transportation, you can send a representative to apply for you.

If you do not have anyone to send, call your local food stamp office and ask them to waive the in-person interview. If they agree, your information can be taken by phone. They will mail you an application to sign. Mail it back as soon as possible. The clock does not start until they receive your signed application.

What happens after I get expedited benefits?

Expedited SNAP is not automatic every month. To keep getting benefits, you must complete the regular SNAP application process. This means:

  • You will be called back for another interview.
  • You will need to submit more documents.

If you skip these steps, your benefits will stop. Read How Do I Get SNAP? to learn more about the regular SNAP process.

What if I am denied expedited SNAP?

If you are not allowed to apply or you are denied, you may have the right to an expedited fair hearing. Get legal help right away. Visit LawHelpNY’s legal directory to find a legal aid office near you. Legal aid organizations do not have enough lawyers to help everyone, but it is always worth checking.
