If the Social Security Administration (SSA) believes you need assistance managing your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, they may appoint a "representative payee" to receive and handle your money. It's possible that when you moved into the adult home, you may have signed an agreement allowing them to be your representative payee, even if you don't remember doing so.

If you need help with your finances but prefer someone other than the adult home to handle your money, you have the right to choose a different representative payee. This person should be someone you trust and who cares about your well-being. It cannot be a doctor, therapist, or anyone who provides services to you in exchange for money.

If you believe you are capable of handling your finances and wish to do so independently, you can contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. To demonstrate your ability to manage your money, you may need to provide a letter from a doctor or therapist confirming your capability. It's important to note that there is a potential downside: If the SSA interprets this letter as a sign of improved disability, they may require you to prove that you still qualify for SSI benefits.
