If you have children and live in New York State, you may be able to get money back through the Empire State Child Credit (ESCC). A tax credit is money the government gives back to you, based on your children's ages and your income.

For the 2025 tax year, you can get up to $1,000 for each child under age 4, and up to $330 for each child ages 4–16. You do not need to have a job or earn any income to qualify.

You just need to file a New York State tax return by April 15.

Getting this credit will not affect your other benefits like Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, or housing assistance.

Go to the OTDA website to learn more about the income limits, how to file, and where to find free filing help near you.
