| June 29, 2026 ALERT: The Supreme Court agreed that the Trump administration does not have to follow the rules to end TPS. The government will probably end TPS for some or all countries. LawHelpNY will update this article soon. |
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a temporary immigration benefit and work permit. It is for:
- People from certain countries
- Who are already in the United States
TPS allows them to stay until it is safe to return. TPS is usually granted because of war, an earthquake, a hurricane or other emergency in the person's home country.
The Trump Administration has been trying to end TPS, without following the rules. Advocates went to court to protect people with TPS. Many of their countries are still dangerous or war-torn. But the Supreme Court decided on June 29, 2026 that the Trump Administration does not have to follow the TPS rules. Now it can end TPS. The lower courts that delayed the end of TPS will have to follow the Supreme Court order. If you have TPS, pay attention to news or notices from the government about your TPS.
As of June, 2026, here is what happening to the U.S. Government's TPS list:

- El Salvador (Valid through September 9, 2026)
- Ethiopia (the Administration announced it would end February 13, 2026, but a court delayed the end)
- Haiti (the Administration announced it would end February 3, 2026, but a court delayed it. The Supreme Court decided on June 25, 2026 that the Administration can end TPS for Haitians)

- Syria (the Administration announced the end, but a court advocates at IRAP brought a case to court to protect Syrians. The Supreme Court decided on June 25, 2026 that the Administration can end TPS for Syrians. It will probably end July 27, 2026).
