Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a temporary immigration benefit and work permit. It is for:
- People from certain countries
- Who are already in the United States
TPS allows them to stay until it is safe to return. TPS is usually granted because of war, an earthquake, a hurricane or other emergency in the person's home country.
The Trump Administration wants to end TPS and the Supreme Court decided that they can. We are waiting for some lower court orders to follow the Supreme Court decision. Then the Administration can set final expiration dates. Advocates are still fighting to keep TPS protections for people from some countries.
If you have TPS, pay attention to reliable nonprofits, and news or notices from the government. It is a confusing situation.
As of August 27, 2026, here is what happening to the U.S. Government's TPS list:
- Burma: Ended August 7, 2026.
- El Salvador: Scheduled to end September 9, 2026.
- Ethiopia: Ended August 18, 2026.
- Haiti: Ended August 5, 2026.
- Lebanon: Scheduled to end November 27, 2026.
- Somalia: Ended August 14, 2026.
- South Sudan: Ended August 7, 2026.
- Sudan: Scheduled to end October 19, 2026.
- Syria: We are looking into this. Check back soon.
- Ukraine: Scheduled to end October 19, 2026.
- Venezuela: Some Venezuelans have TPS until October 2, 2026, others have already expired. Check the U.S. government website.
- Yemen: Ended July 20, 2026.
